The Boston Red Sox have claimed former Royals catcher Erik Kratz off waivers.
Kratz was scheduled to run from the 15-day disabled list earlier this month but was designated for assignment before he could be called back up.
The Royals decided to keep Drew Butera as a backup to Salvador Perez, and Butera started Sunday’s game against the Red Sox.
Kratz was seen as a better offensive option, Butera better defensively.
“He’s as good a backup catcher as you’re going to find in the big leagues because of his ability to call a game, to block balls in the dirt and to receive balls,” Royals manager Ned Yost said of Butera before Sunday’s game.
Kratz played in four games for the Royals this season and suffered a left foot injury on May 6.
He appeared in 13 games for the Royals last season after being obtained from the Blue Jays along with pitcher Liam Hendriks for third baseman Danny Valencia.
